Day 288: Winding down..
We’re winding down from Christmas here in our household. The last log to go on the fire is slowly burning out, most everybody is already in bed, and we’re already starting to get back in the hustle and bustle of normal life. It was a really good Christmas as usual, my family is undeniably some of the most generous people. Merry Christmas everyone :) Stay safe during your holiday...

Day 287: The hopes and fears of all the years
I absolutely love the Christmas Eve services at my church. These people have known me since I was about 9 and have literally been a part of my upbringing. Singing one of my favorite hymns by candle light, surrounded by those people = perfection.

Day 286: So. So. So. So. Close.
All the stockings were hung by the fireplace with care.. We’re so close to Christmas. Our indoor decorations are relatively minimal (well, compared to other houses I’ve seen) but I like it that way. The familiar ones make me happy, and I still can’t get out of my favorite chair (see Day 285).  For our Christmas we celebrate with my immediate family (4 kids including me,...

Day 285: Jiggity jig
Home again home again :) Hereby (re-)claiming my favorite spot in the house, right next to the fireplace. Not much else to say, because this is pretty self-explanatory. And by self-explanatory I mean.. pretty damn awesome.

Day 284: The two loves of my life
So normally when girls say “these are the two loves of my life!!” they mean like their hubby and new baby, or hubby and puppy, or anything well.. normal. This is my ridiculous(-ly amazing and wonderful) boyfriend and my one stuffed animal, a turtle from the Baltimore Aquarium. Ian is determined to call him Myrtle (rhymes with turtle), but the turtle is clearly a boy so that name...

Day 283: Chestnuts roasting on an open fire.
So I didn’t realize people actually still DID roast chestnuts on an open fire, but we did! Houston’s 75 degree weather in December was perfect for an outdoors open fire on a plain Monday night. Obvi wine was involved. Turns out chestnuts are delicious. As long as you don’t burn them. Sadly the eclipse did not join us because of some cloudy weather, but all in all it was a great...

Day 282: Texas shaped pretzels
After finishing off the last week of finals, this weekend has been downright fabulous. Ended Sunday by heading over to my good friend Vicki’s house (I was her and her hubby’s first dinner guest!) and we had some yummy dinner, baked banana bread and other sweet goodies. Includinggg chocolate covered pretzels, which just happened to be TEXAS shaped. How genius. But mostly delicious.

Day 281: Hey baby!
This weekend we got to visit our lab’s postdoc and see his beautiful 6wk old baby! She is absolutely adorable and quite precious. I haven’t held a baby that young in a while so it was nice to get my baby fix. (I’m not kidding about the baby fix.. 2 separate people have made the joke ‘If a baby goes missing, see if Sarah has it first…’). It was so much fun!...

Day 280: Baby I like it
Comfy new sweater from my best friend? Friday? All is well in the world. Oh and you may not recognize me because I actually wore my hair down today. CRAZY. Crazy I tell you. And I didn’t put it up alllll day :)

Day 279: I like plaid. plaid plaid plaid.
Short post, cause I’m not very exciting. I did absolutely nothing tonight. NOTHING. It was fantastic. Mismatching jammies, TV, oreos. Perfection.

Day 277: Happy Dance
Finals are OVER. Over over over. Functional magnetic resonance imaging paper? Check. Ethical Dimensions in Biomedical Sciences exam? Check. Theoretical neuroscience exam? Check. Check plus indeed friends.  Sorry for taking forever to update. I was basking in the glory of “wait.. I can just sit here and do nothing?”-ness and neglected ze blog. But I still took pictures, don’t...

Day 278: We're not being creepers..
.. we just really like your Christmas lights. To celebrate being done with finals/hang out one last time before heading home, my friend and I made a stop by Chocolate Bar (obviously, where else do I go?!) and then drove through some neighborhoods looking at Christmas lights on the way home. This one was totally my favorite (although there are a few awesome runner ups). So in looking at one...

Day 276: Finals mode
This is pretty much the only time of the year I can totally justify having a 3x5 foot white board on my wall. So I’m going to rock that as much as I can. Benefit of not living with boyfriend- I can wear the same tshirt all weekend without any complaints. I also may or may not have shaved my legs in a week. I’d rather spend that 5 minutes just standing in shower and enjoying the hot...

Day 275: First comes studying..
Grad school sort of makes you put your life on hold. You’re not in a real job (ahem, with a real salary), you can’t really start a family, or do anything, well, besides school. I still think it’s worth it (check back in a year, I might have a different opinion), but for the most part the biggest benefit is that I totally don’t have to share dessert. And on a Saturday...

Day 274: Cookie Decorating and Jersey Shore..
Cookie decorating and the show Jersey Shore (for the record, I’m a reality TV junkie and I totally won’t watch that show..) should have nothing in common, but when you get enough fun people together (and drink enough glasses of egg nog), they totally do. Have you ever decorated a gingerbread man to look like Snookie? Didn’t think so. Above you will see the necessary supplies...

Day 273: You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch
It’s been a long week. So I stop by the grocery store on my way home to pick up a mix-and-match six pack of beer (kid in a candy store, post-21 years old style). Walking back to the car, handle breaks, glass breaks, beer sacrificed to the parkling lot pavement. Somehow 4/6 beers avoided destruction in the fall, and will promptly be consumed this week. Partly because they’re...

Day 272: I just like to smile.. smiling's my...
Today was fun. After work, a few of us got together to make Christmas cards for kids at the local hospital (which is almost ironic because one of them sells Christmas cards made by kids and makes like $1M off them, but whatever..). I think when they get these cards they’re going to wonder what sort of special creatures made these cards but it was fun to listen to Christmas music and do the...

Day 271: Makin' a list..
I could make a mile long list about the things I love about Christmas, but gift wrapping is so up there!! This year I wanted to step it up a notch so I had fun in Target picking out matching paper, ribbon and gift tags. Doesn’t it look all perty? (My mom says that makes me sound Texan..) Even the boy was impressed with how good it looks! PS- That present is for my bro! So excited for him...

Day 270: Maybe it just needs a little love
Gosh I love Christmas you guys. Like, seriously in love. The decorations and the music and hanging out by the fire and everything. It’s wonderful. I won’t be spending Christmas in my own place for at least a few more years (I’ll fly back home to the rest of my family), but I couldn’t let a whole December go by without a tree.. so thank goodness for Target and my Charlie...

Day 269: False Start
Oh what a mess. I’ve been trying to get everything together to move soon and pulling things down off my wall (hence the stack of frames building) and wow, people are flaky. Move date pushed back. One word for yall… grrrrr.

Day 268: Goofballs..
Wow.. we’re weird. This is what happens when you study for 6+ hours and then stay up til 2am, where ‘still hyped on adrenaline but dang tired which comes out as goofy’ mood appears. And then you start playing with the effects feature of iChat video. And then you have this proof to show your offspring what a weird person your mom actually was..

Day 267: Houston, we have a carpet..
Okay this doesn’t look like much but that’s the point. I actually cleaned my room (what am I, like 12?!) and you can even see there was carpet underneath all my paperwork and textbooks and clothes. It’s a miracle! And takes the stress level down just a notch.

Day 266: Ready to quit
I’ll admit it.. today I totally wanted to quit grad school. My lab work doesn’t seem to be progressing much, my classes are the most frustrating endeavor I’ve taken on, I’m out here in the middle of the country away from home and the boy. It’s a lot to sacrifice to be completely miserable some days. But this blog is about being thankful. So I need to accept my...

Day 265: Christmas preparations
Since I won’t get to spend Christmas at my own place for at least a few more years, there’s not a lot of decorating I really get to do. But putting Christmas on my nails, that I’ve got covered. If this combo doesn’t scream Hi-I-freaking-love-Christmas, I don’t know what does:)

Day 264: Maybe I should go to the store.
. I have used this dang bottle of body wash for like 6 months now. And it’s been at like *10 drops left* for over a week. Finally squeezed the last half drop out and left my shower not at squeaky clean as usual. This really was the most photographable moment of my day. I wish I was lying. Next Monday I’ll be more inspired, I promise.

Rabbit Rabbit Day/Happy December!
Does anybody else say rabbit rabbit day on the first of every month? A friend in high school told me to do that to bring good luck to the month. I don’t know why, but I still say it every 1st. Things I am really excited about this month: 1. Breaking out these earrings again. I’ve been waiting since last December to do so. I originally got them for a tacky Christmas sweater party, but...
